Techvera Referral

Effective January 2018, Techvera has collaborated with Nick’s Computer Services to handle all residential service.  Techvera will be no longer be offering residential support so that it can focus on its business clients.  Techvera will be referring residential clients to Nick’s Computer Services.

Reese Ormand, the CEO of Techvera, and Nick Woods, the owner of Nick’s Computer Services have known each other since 2008.  Reese transformed Geek on Wheels into Techvera and has excelled in handling business clients.  Nick Woods has focused his business on residential clients.

This is an exciting time for our companies.  We are expecting to grow with this endeavor.  We look forward to excelling at our talents, and we are excited about making sure our clients have the best service possible.

SysKey

Microsoft has recently disabled SysKey with the Windows Fall Creators Update version 1709.  That may not mean much to the normal computer user unless you have been scammed.  Scammers that fail to hook a victim will run SysKey on a users computer.  The SysKey creates a password for the user’s account.  The password is not a typical password; it is a password used to encrypt the registry of the computer.  Most scammers erase recovery methods before deploying this tool by wiping out system restore points.  After the scammer is gone, the user ponders why there is a mysterious password box during startup of the computer.

The removal of this tool is a win for the Microsoft community.  SysKey was too easy to deploy.  Now scammers will have to abandon this scam on up to date Windows 10 machines.  Remember the best way to avoid a scam is to never let anyone on your computer you don’t trust.  If you ever feel pressured or upset, you should terminate any contact (phone and remote support) with the other party.  Ask family, friends, or call Nick’s Computer Services for another opinion.

Verizon Email to AOL

You may have noticed lately if you have Verizon email that there was a notice to switch to AOL. If you ignored the notice or never received it and you are using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird, your email might not be working. Verizon purchased AOL and has decided to transition its clients to the AOL email platform.  If you find your Verizon email not working, you can contact Verizon for assistance or you can go to webmail.verizon.net.  Sign into your account with your username and password.  You will then be prompted to setup your email with AOL.  Keep the same email address.  You can change your password if you like.  Just write it down or remember it.  Afterwards, you can sign into your email at mail.aol.com.  If you wish to continue using your email client as before, open your email client.  If you changed the password, add the new password to your email client.  If you did not change the password, you should not have to do anything.  All the email server settings should be the same and everything will function just as it did before.  One benefit to this move is that AOL supports IMAP something that Verizon did not.  Although your email client would have to be reconfigured, your email could be saved to a server and downloaded to multiple devices without having a computer or a device delete email from the server.  If you need additional help, then contact Nick’s Computer Services.
